Frequently Asked Questions

Q. If ebooks are the rage do I still need printed books?

A.
Yes. Ebooks will never replace printed books. Many ebook readers will come back and buy a printed copy of their favorite ebook. You also need printed copies for your book signings.

Q.
Why do I need a book designer? Can't I do it all myself with Microsoft Word?

A.
Word is an excellent program, however it's not professional quality graphic design software. It has limitations that prevent you from producing an industry standard book.

Q. How much will it cost to publish my book?

A.
That depends on a lot of variables, such as the length of your book, how many photos or illustrations you plan to use, and how it's going to be published. Please contact us, and we will be happy to provide you with a custom price quote for your project.

Q.
I don't have the money to pay you up front for your services. Can I split my book profits with you instead?

A.
Sorry, but Good Oak Press does not work on speculation under any circumstances, and, sadly, there is never a guarantee that any given book will make a profit.

Q.
I found some really cool photos on the Internet that I want to use in my book. I don't see a copyright symbol or the name of the photographer. Would I be breaking any laws if I used them?

A.
Good Oak Press does not give legal advice. However, common sense says that when in doubt it's best to ask for permission. Generally speaking, using any photo that you didn't take, or have someone else take for you, without permission, could be considered copyright infringement, and may result in serious legal trouble for you. For more specific information regarding copyrights, fair use, and public domain you may want to consider consulting with a copyright attorney.

Q.
So, if I hire you, who owns the copyright?

A.
Your design fee includes the transfer of certain rights to you. Simply put, you'll have the right to use your cover design for your book and for any other use related to marketing and promoting your book. Good Oak Press reserves the right to include your book cover, or other creative projects we may provided you, in our portfolio for marketing purposes, which gives you some free publicity in return. Good Oak Press does not own the rights to any manuscripts or actual copy in any of the books we publish. Our authors retain all rights to their work.

Q.
Do you do illustrating?

A.
Illustration and photography services are outsourced to other highly skilled professionals.

Q.
How long is your turnaround time?

A.
It can vary, depending on the complexity of the project. Most projects average seven to ten business days, for typesetting, cover design and ebook formatting. Book printing and publishing can take up to 30 days, and it may take several weeks for your title your title to be fully distributed. Please be sure to let us know your deadline, if you have one.

Q.
Do you provide an ISBN numbers?

A.
Yes, but only for those authors who opt to have Good Oak Press publish their books. We cannot provide ISBN numbers for authors who only wish to have us design or format their books.

Q.
Do you work with other publishers too?

A.
Yes. We do provide book cover design, interior page layout, and ebook formatting services to other publishers.
